Germany Gears Up for the 2026 European Senior Taekwondo Championships

In 2026, all eyes in European taekwondo will be on Germany, as the country prepares to host the continent’s most important taekwondo events, firmly placing Germany at the center of the international taekwondo calendar.

Germany is officially set to welcome one of the most prestigious competitions in Europe, with the 2026 European Senior Taekwondo Championships taking place in Munich from 12 to 14 May 2026 at the state-of-the-art BMW Park Venue.

Held every two years, the European Senior Taekwondo Championships represent the pinnacle of continental competition, bringing together Europe’s top-ranked athletes, national teams, and elite officials for three days of world-class sport. In 2026, the heart of European taekwondo will beat in Munich, as the continent’s finest competitors battle for the most coveted European titles.

The confirmation of dates and venue follows constructive discussions and close cooperation among all stakeholders, with the valuable support of ETU President Mr. Pragalos, German Taekwondo Union President and ETU Vice President Mr. Kohlhofer, and Mr. Jeongkang Seo, Secretary General of World Taekwondo, whose cooperation contributed significantly to the successful planning of the event.

The European Senior Taekwondo Championships return to Munich after 48 years, following the city’s role as host of the second European Championships in ETU history in 1978. The 2026 edition will mark the fourth time this distinguished event is staged in Germany, after previous championships in Munich (1978), Stuttgart (1984), and Bonn (2006).

Germany’s leading role in European taekwondo is further reflected in its competitive legacy. Historically, Germany stands among the top three nations in overall medal collection at the European Senior Taekwondo Championships, underlining the country’s long-standing excellence and contribution to the sport.

Munich, renowned for its rich sporting heritage and modern infrastructure, offers the ideal stage for a championship that promises high-intensity competition, outstanding organization, and a vibrant atmosphere for athletes, officials, spectators, and millions of viewers worldwide. The championships will be televised, allowing taekwondo fans across Europe and beyond to follow every decisive moment at the highest level.

Following a decision by the ETU Council to adjust the international calendar, the dates originally foreseen for the European Senior Championships were aligned with the WT President’s Cup, ensuring a cohesive G4 event structure. As a result, Germany will also host the WT President’s Cup in Nuremberg from 4 to 7 June 2026 at the KIA Metropol Arena.

The ETU Secretary General Mr. Antonio Barbarino announced during the recent ETU Council Meeting in Sarajevo that major surprises are being prepared as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the European Taekwondo Union. These anniversary celebrations will culminate in a dedicated 50th Anniversary Event, which will be held in Nuremberg on 6 June 2026, bringing together the European taekwondo family to honor five decades of excellence, unity, and sporting achievement.

With the European Senior Championships, the WT President’s Cup, and the ETU 50th Anniversary Celebration all taking place in the same year, Germany becomes the undisputed focal point of European taekwondo in 2026. All lights will be on Germany as it prepares to deliver an exceptional year of elite competition, celebration, and historic moments.

As anticipation continues to build, the European Taekwondo Union looks ahead to a memorable and historic taekwondo year, celebrating elite performance, organizational excellence, and 50 years of ETU legacy.
